As I have been told, school sales (and many other types of vendor sales) have a notorius reputation ashaving correspondingly low sales for art vendors that sell handmade one-of-a kind goods. As an art vendor with handmade items, participation as a vendor in sales like this seems counter productive. Worse, participating in one that is out of town seems masochistic. Well, I have succumbed. Why? I am told, the Annual Buckman Art Show School Sale is different. And so it seems. The Buckman School Sale is in its 25th year. (This must be some kind of record, right?) Located in hip, artisanal Portland, Oregon, I am told the Buckman school is known the "Art School", the place to go in Portland for those interested in the arts. (Please note: This is all second and third hand information). Further, I have been told by 2 artists I admire, (Cynthia Spencer and Katy LaReau) that this show is FUN! OK, well, dang, fun does sounds good and hey, my adored OLDER sister does live in Portland and I haven't bothered her in at least a week. I have to admit Buckman seems to make it easy. They provide tables, stickers and electrical outlets for (GASP) over 140 vendors. Wow thats a lot. Hmmm but yes, it does sound fun. I will be there Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8 (next weekend) So please come by, say hi and support your local(ish) vendors. Yep, I missed a few and no, these aren't in the right order. Done! and Yes I WOULD do it again. It was fun. Putting together the collage was our final project and I used PicMonkey to do it. Learned a new tool! I did not do the last project which was a portrait of ourself...maybe someday when I have more time. Anyhow, the 30 day project was organized by Kelly Crosser Algae. She put a lot of energy and time into this and did a great job. Thanks again Kelly.
The challenge - The challenge for Day 27 & 28 (I think you know what it is).....Create a fused glass powder sgraffito drawing of our model, Albert. This was fun. I didn't get it perfect. I drew the shape of the head straight on instead of slightly tilted and so everything is off BUT I enjoyed this and I think I will do this again. The next one will hopefully be good enough to fire.
This time, the tree should be created upside-down. That means that you will start at the top of your glass with the trunk, and pull the glass toward you to make the branches. Today you may use both hands in your work, plus the business card and your choice of tools. Here is the 'catch'... Anything on the left side of the tree must be drawn with your left hand, and anything on the right side of the tree must be drawn with your right hand.
Day 23 - Take a photo of something you collect and create a glass powder sgraffito drawing of it.1/25/2015 Not so much anymore, but I love Piglet...the original Piglet.
I remember the day I learned that the original piglet was actually an armadillo. Think about it-tiny pointed nose, pointed tail and a green lined body. That is so not a pig. Disney then "disneyfied" him and made him a pig. I guess they figured people wouldn't know what an armadillo was? Anyway Piglet has always had a special place in my heart and yes, I used to collect little miniature (and sometimes larger) piglets. Not the best but I think I am going to fire this drawing and use it as a bit in a "later-to-be-made" collage. Ha-at this point I am not only one day behind in posting (and 2 days behind in doing). Sigh
Day 20 - Sgraffito Flowers using only black frit.
Day 21 - Compose a collection of flowers in a container using only black frit. Not saving either of these but when I have time I may go back and redo this challenge. Could have been more fun and a keeper with other images. I am going to fire this one. I used Dark Red Powder BE # 124. I think I will make the stem green and then add other reds and spring and other greens for shading. I look forward to finishing this one.
